Padres Sign Samad Taylor to Minors Contract (2026)

In a move that might seem minor, the San Diego Padres have just signed infielder Samad Taylor to a minor-league contract, but this could be the start of something big. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Taylor will also receive an invitation to Spring Training, marking a new chapter in his journey through the ranks of professional baseball. But here's where it gets interesting: Taylor, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners last week, chose to become a free agent before inking this deal. So, what’s the story behind this 27-year-old infielder, and why should Padres fans care?

Taylor’s path to this point has been anything but straightforward. Drafted in the tenth round by Cleveland in 2016, he spent six seasons in the minors with the Guardians and Blue Jays before reaching Triple-A in 2022. There, he showcased his potential with a solid batting line of .258/.337/.426 and a 104 wRC+ in 280 plate appearances. His on-base skills were on full display with a 10.0% walk rate, and his speed was undeniable—he stole 23 bases. Even more impressive? He managed to slash his strikeout rate from 29.4% in Double-A (2021) to 22.1% in Triple-A. In August 2022, he was part of a trade that sent him to the Royals alongside right-hander Max Castillo in exchange for Whit Merrifield.

And this is the part most people miss: Taylor’s brief stint in the majors with the Royals in 2023 didn’t exactly set the world on fire. In 69 plate appearances, he batted just .200/.279/.267 with a wRC+ of 50. However, he continued to demonstrate his strong walk rate (10.1%) and speed, stealing eight bases. After being traded to the Mariners in January 2024, his big-league opportunities were limited, with only five plate appearances that year and nine in 2025. But here’s the twist: his Triple-A performance from 2024-25 tells a different story.

While he was 9% below average by wRC+ in 2024, he maintained a solid on-base percentage of 35.2% and remained a base-stealing threat with 50 stolen bases in 136 games. In 2025, he took his game up a notch, boosting his slugging percentage to .461 and cutting his strikeout rate to 18.7%. His batting line of .296/.378/.461 was 14% better than average by wRC+, proving he still has plenty to offer.

But here’s where it gets controversial: With less than a year of big-league service time and no minor-league options remaining, Taylor’s role with the Padres is primarily as a depth piece. The Padres already have Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Jake Cronenworth locked in at three infield spots, and newcomer Sung Mun Song is expected to fill in around the infield and potentially the outfield. So, is Taylor just a placeholder, or could he surprise us all? His versatility—having logged 1,136 innings in the outfield in the minors from 2023-25—makes him a valuable utility player. But will that be enough to earn him a spot in the majors?

What do you think? Is Samad Taylor a smart pickup for the Padres, or just another minor-league signing that won’t make waves? Let us know in the comments below!
