Nigeria's Cyberattack Crisis: 4,701 Weekly Attacks, Top in Africa (2026)

Nigeria is facing a cyberattack crisis, with a staggering 4,701 weekly cyberattacks, making it the top African country in terms of cyberattack volume. This alarming figure, revealed in the latest Global Threat Intelligence report by Check Point Research, represents a 12% year-on-year increase and a rise from 4,622 weekly attacks recorded in December 2025. The report highlights a concerning trend of relentless cyberattacks on Nigerian organizations, with attackers seemingly driven by a desire to explore something of great importance in the region. Nigeria's cyberattack volume not only leads the continent but also significantly exceeds the continental average of 2,864 attacks per organization per week. Global organizations faced an average of 2,090 cyber-attacks per week in January, marking a three percent increase from December and a 17 percent year-on-year rise, indicating a sustained escalation in cyber threats worldwide. The report further emphasizes the disparity in cyberattack volumes across African countries, with Nigeria and South Africa experiencing notable increases. This raises important questions about the factors driving these cyberattacks and the measures needed to protect against them. The Head of Security Engineering for Africa at Check Point Software Technologies, Ian van Rensburg, warns that the numbers reflect a shift in both scale and sophistication, and calls for urgent attention to address this growing threat.
