New Kindle Scribe Colorsoft & Front Light: Hands-On Review! (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling tech adventure as Amazon unveils its latest Kindle Scribe models, including the highly anticipated Kindle Scribe Colorsoft! But here's the twist: these devices come with a hefty price tag, sparking debates among tech enthusiasts. So, are these new Scribes worth the investment? Let's dive in and explore the features that might just justify the cost.

The Kindle Scribe Revolution: A Colorful Display and More

Amazon's fall product launch event in September 2025 introduced three new Kindle Scribes, including a flagship color model, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. The company promised that the front-light models would be available in time for the holidays, and true to their word, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe with Front Light are now on the market. However, the entry-level Kindle Scribe without Front Light is still awaiting its early 2026 release.

Our expert reviewer, David Carnoy, has received samples of the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and the new monochrome Kindle Scribe with Front Light, and he's ready to put them through their paces. So, what makes these Scribes so special?

First off, the new Scribes boast a larger 11-inch screen, an upgrade from the previous 10.2-inch model. This increase in size is achieved through smaller bezels, and the screens feature redesigned "display stacks" and a new mini-LED lighting system. Additionally, the devices are slightly slimmer and lighter, weighing in at 400 grams compared to the previous model's 430 grams. Under the hood, a new custom MediaTek processor promises a 40% performance boost.

But here's where it gets controversial: none of the new Scribes are waterproof, unlike the Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Colorsoft. This omission might raise some eyebrows among potential buyers.

Amazon has also addressed an issue with yellow tinging on the display of its previous color E Ink model, the Kindle Colorsoft. The company paused shipping and replaced affected units, and it appears they've successfully fixed or minimized this problem in the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.

After unboxing his Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, our reviewer immediately checked for any yellow tinging, and he reports no issues, even with the color style set to "vivid" and the front light at full brightness. He tends to keep the light's warmth setting cooler, which results in a whiter/bluer color temperature.

In the coming days, we'll bring you a full review of all three new Kindle Scribe models. But for now, you can check out our reviewer's hands-on first impressions (https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/i-go-hands-on-with-the-new-kindle-scribe-colorsoft-is-it-worth-630/).

Amazon describes the Scribe upgrades as follows:

  • A new front light system with miniaturized LEDs for a narrower bezel and uniform lighting.
  • Texture-molded glass to improve pen friction on the screen.
  • A rearchitected display stack to minimize parallax, creating a direct-on-page writing experience.
  • A new MediaTek quad-core chip, more memory, and custom Oxide display technology for improved speed and responsiveness.

So, are you convinced that these Kindle Scribes are worth the investment? Or do you think the price tag is too steep for the features offered? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! Let's spark a discussion and explore the pros and cons of these exciting new devices.
