Imagine the heartbreak: a devoted fan, facing a terminal illness, might not live to see the release of their most anticipated game, Grand Theft Auto 6. But, in a story that warms the heart, Rockstar Games stepped in to make a dream come true.
About a month ago, Anthony Armstrong, a developer at Ubisoft Toronto, reached out to his network on LinkedIn. He was seeking help for a family member who had received devastating news and was given only 6-12 months to live. The reason? This individual was a massive GTA fan, and with the game's release date looming, time was running out.
Armstrong's post, which has since been removed, explained the situation. He hoped someone at Rockstar Games or Rockstar Toronto could arrange an exclusive playtest, allowing the fan to experience GTA 6 before it was too late. He even offered to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to protect the game's secrets, showing the gravity of the situation.
Fast forward a few weeks, and there was good news. The CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, reached out. The final update was even more promising: "We spoke to them today and got great news. That's all I can really say, but thank you all from the bottom of my heart".
This act of kindness is especially poignant considering the game's release date has been pushed back. GTA 6 is now slated for a November 19, 2026 release, a delay that Take-Two says is to ensure the game meets the high standards players expect. Rockstar has the full support of Take-Two, of course.
But here's where it gets controversial... While this story is heartwarming, it also highlights the intense anticipation surrounding GTA 6. The delay has only fueled the excitement, and the fact that a terminally ill fan was granted early access underscores the game's cultural impact.
And this is the part most people miss... This situation also shows the human side of the gaming industry, where companies sometimes go above and beyond to make a difference.
