"I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not" is a must-watch film, now streaming on CNN and soon to be available on HBO Max. But here's where it gets controversial: Chase's reputation for being a massive jerk is front and center, and he didn't think Zenovich would keep the rude comments in the final cut.
Zenovich, a seasoned documentarian who's tackled tough subjects like Roman Polanski and Lance Armstrong, was nervous about bringing up Chase's reputation. She had no idea if she'd be thrown out of the '80s comedy icon's house!
"Part of the thrill of this job is the unpredictability," she says. "And yes, he was rude, but I think he was just being himself. It's all part of the process."
The documentary explores Chase's career, including his iconic roles in "Caddyshack," "Fletch," and the "National Lampoon's Vacation" series. But it also delves into his controversial exit from the cult favorite sitcom "Community."
Chase, who played the grumpy Pierce Hawthorne, was fired partway through the fourth season after allegedly using a racial slur in an argument on set. Co-star Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Shirley, was involved in the incident, and her recent Instagram post about the documentary has sparked a lot of interest.
"These are things I've never spoken of publicly," Brown wrote. Zenovich was surprised by Brown's decision to speak out, as she had reached out to the actress during filming.
"You're limited by who's willing to talk and how much they're willing to share," Zenovich explains. "It's a constant dig for information, and you never know what you'll get. That's the fun part!"
