Caltrans has embarked on a $23 million rehabilitation project, aiming to replace damaged pavement on the northbound 5 Freeway between Empire Avenue and Cohasset Street. The first of six extended weekend closures began Friday at 10 p.m., reducing the freeway to just two lanes between Empire Avenue and Buena Vista Street. But here's where it gets controversial: the closure also impacts the connector from westbound State Route 134 to the northbound freeway, and all northbound lanes will be fully shut down from 1 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday for restriping. This timing, while necessary for worker safety, poses significant challenges for essential workers like Burbank resident Andrew Perdue, who works late-night emergency shifts in the medical field.
'If it makes it easier in the long run and we don't have the backups and traffic jams, yeah, sounds great,' Perdue said. 'But the short-term pain is going to be pretty painful.'
Detour signs have been strategically placed near multiple on- and off-ramps to guide drivers around the work zone, but the 55-hour closures are still causing headaches for many. For instance, driver Stephanie Chacon summed it up: 'Well, it's going to be a lot of waiting time. Traffic is bad as it is.'
