Conversely, 32% of EU residents were renters in 2024, a slight increase from 31% the year before. This shift, though small, hints at evolving housing trends.
But here's where it gets truly fascinating: Romania stands out with an astounding 94% homeownership rate, making it the undisputed leader in the EU! Following closely are Slovakia at 93% and Hungary at 92%. It seems these nations have a deep-rooted culture of owning property.
And this is the part most people miss... While homeownership is the norm across most of the EU, there are a few notable exceptions. Germany, for instance, is a nation where renting is actually more prevalent, with 53% of its population choosing to rent their homes. This is quite a contrast to the EU average! After Germany, Austria sees 46% of its residents renting, and Denmark has 39% of its population as tenants.
